Lorena Bobbitt cut off her husband's penis. The news was kind of funny for women and completely cringe-worthy for men. Now what does Mr. Bobbitt do? John isn't the only one missing his Johnson; there are some men born without their precious appendage and others who lose it in accidents, fires and meat cleavers.
Enter Dr. Anthony Atala at Wake Forest University. He has spent 18 years trying to culture penile tissue. Dr. Atala has been able to seed a rabbit's cells onto a scaffold, or matrix of tissue to allow growth of functional erectile tissue. This is amazing; it's a grow-your-own-organ and the future of regenerative medicine. If we can successfully grow an organ like a penis, with its own brain, then it paves the way for creating more complex organs using the patient's own cells as a starting point. And it all started with a man trying to grow a penis.
